A New Aperture Coupled Microstrip Slot Antenna
Aperture coupled microstrip slot antenna couples the patch antenna with microstripline through an aperture. To improve the radiation pattern, there are three techniques -First using reflector plate, second using cavity and third by adjustment of the phase angle using the movement of the patch antenna on the slot i.e. By adjusting the SWR distribution. One of the useful features of the aperture coupled microstrip antenna is that it can provide substantially improved impedance bandwidth. While single layer probe fed element has limited impedance bandwidth of 2−5%, an aperture coupled element with modified slot is able to increase the impedance bandwidth 4.

A New Aperture Coupled Microstrip Slot Antenna Combo
A microstrip-fed aperture coupled microstrip antenna was designed by Rao et. al. [1]. A variant of this antenna was implemented in FEKO for the following specifications:
- 5.5 GHz centre frequency
- 50 Ω input impedance
- Substrate, ε = 3.2, height = 1.0 mm

Dimensions of geometry are:
- dy = 29 mm
- dx = 18 mm
- Ws = 2 mm
- Ls = 54 mm
- Wm = 2.35 mm
- Wp = Lp = 2t = 0.9dx = 16.2 mm
FEKO’s implementation of the planar Greens function features the ability to model the slots in the ground plane as magnetic triangles, which means that only the slots are meshed and not the ground plane itself, saving significantly on simulation resources.
