Alternatively known as a bus slot or expansion port, an expansion slot is a connection or port inside a computer on the motherboard or riser card. It provides an installation point for a hardware expansion card to be connected. For example, if you wanted to install a new video card in the computer, you'd purchase a video expansion card and install that card into the compatible expansion slot.

Many of the above expansion card slots are obsolete. You're most likely only going to encounter AGP, PCI, and PCI Express when working with computers today. Adding additional expansion slots for older motherboards could be accomplished by using a riser board, which would add several ISA or PCI slots. Today, riser boards are rarely used with motherboards, as there is limited need for additional expansion slots with modern motherboards.

As mentioned above, every motherboard model is unique, so to determine the type of expansion slots on the motherboard, consult the board's specifications and owner's manual. You can also open the computer case and visually examine the motherboard.
Why do computers have expansion slots?
Computers have expansion slots to give the user the ability to add new devices to their computer. For example, a computer gamer may upgrade their video card to get better performance in their games. An expansion slot allows them to remove the old video card and add a new video card without replacing the motherboard.

Today, the most commonly used expansion slot used and found on computer motherboards is the PCI Express expansion slot.
Does a laptop have an expansion slot?
Laptops do not have expansion slots like a desktop computer. However, some laptops do have PC Cards that can be inserted into the side of the laptop. They may also have a Cardbus slot for an ExpressCard to be added.

Features
ACCES's PCI to ISA Bus Expansion Interconnect Kit, model PCI-ISA, allows you to expandyour PCI Personal Computer system without timing or noise problems. It provides hardwaretransparent, active bus extension and conversion between a host computer’s PCI slot anda remote expansion chassis’ ISA backplane.The kit consists of two cards, a cable assembly, and a 3½' installation floppy disk. TheExpansion Transmitter card plugs into the host computer and the Expansion Receiver plugsinto the expansion chassis backplane. A shielded, high-noise-immunity cable inter-connectsthe two cards.
The PCI transmitter card is installed like any other PCI card in Windows 95/98. Upon bootup, the system will display a “found new hardware” dialog box. The “driver” for the card ison the floppy disk, and you’ll follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation. The kitis ideal if you have existing software for an application and buy a new computer with no ISAslots to duplicate the system, as long as your ISA cards do not use DMA or Bus Mastering.IRQs 2-7 are now fully supported in DOS and Windows 95/98.

Configuration Utility
The configuration utility also allows the user to select which addresses are not passed to theexpansion chassis. This program is required for proper operation.
Detailed List of Known Limitations
The current version of the PCI-ISA Expansion Kit has some limitations compared to ourPTRC-AT ISA to ISA Bus Expansion Kit. Specifically:
The PCI-ISA does not currently support Plug-n-Play (PnP) devices located in the ExpansionChassis, on motherboards without built-in ISA PnP support.
The PCI-ISA does not support DMA operations in the Expansion Chassis.
The PCI-ISA’s support for Memory on ISA cards is not documented. Very few modern ISAcards are Memory mapped. Please contact us for more information if you need Memorysupport.
The current software provided with the PCI-ISA is only compatible with DOS, Win3.x, andWin9x operating systems. Full source code is provided on the floppy disk allowing you toconvert the code for use for other operating systems. Additionally, we will be providingenhanced operating system support in the future.
